Ever put on a new pair of earrings, only to feel itching or burning a few hours later? You're in good company. Grayling's Founder, Katy, suffered from these same symptoms for years before learning she was allergic to nickel, a common irritant found in jewelry. She launched Grayling in 2009 to offer high-quality, nickel-free jewelry for everyone (especially those with reactive skin)! Informed by science and backed by over 30 years in the jewelry business, Katy is an expert on the needs of sensitive skin.

As reported by the American Academy of Dermatology Association, "It is estimated that more than 18 percent of people in North America are allergic to nickel, including 11 million children in the U.S." (AAD, 2025). For some, it’s a mild irritation; for others, it's enough to cause a severe reaction. That’s why hypoallergenic earrings have become such a powerful concept in the jewelry industry, and why our mission is to make ears everywhere more comfortable.

What “Hypoallergenic” Actually Means

The technical meaning of "hypoallergenic" is that a product has a low likelihood of triggering allergic reactions. The FDA, however, does not recognize a specific standard for the term. Companies aren’t required to test or prove their claims to the FDA, which can mean big trouble for you as a consumer. While the term has significant market value, you should exercise caution when shopping for hypoallergenic jewelry. The best thing you can do to protect yourself against baseless claims is to do your research, read customer reviews, and always check the ingredients and components of any product that makes these claims.

The most common cause of allergic reactions to earrings is nickel. As your body comes in contact with nickel for an extended period of time, primarily through broken skin like a piercing made with a nickel-containing steel needle, you can eventually develop an allergy to it.

According to Rajani Katta, MD, a board-certified dermatologist, "When people are allergic to nickel, they’ll develop a rash right at the site of contact. With time, that rash may spread. A common scenario is when women wear earrings and start to develop a red itchy (and sometimes oozing) rash on their earlobes" (Katta, 2018).
Luckily, there are many alternatives available on the market for individuals with these sensitivities. One standout is titanium jewelry. Titanium has earned a high rating for jewelry due to its natural hypoallergenic properties, and F-136 Implant Grade Titanium is the best option for sensitive skin.

Which Metals Are Safest for Sensitive Ears?

If you have developed nickel sensitivity, there are many hypoallergenic earring options to consider. As mentioned earlier, you will need to be diligent in checking the metals you purchase and confirming they do not contain any metals to which you are sensitive. Continue reading for a list of metals to consider, as well as a few to avoid.

CONSIDER:

  • Implant/Medical Grade Titanium is widely regarded as the gold standard due to its hypoallergenic and biocompatible properties (not harmful to living tissue). It is lightweight, durable, and budget-friendly, making it a standout choice for jewelry. Our customers love our flat back earrings for sensitive skin.

  • 14K Solid Gold is an excellent option for those who can afford it. Invest in 14K Solid Gold or higher to minimize the presence of unknown metal alloys. If shopping for 14K white gold, verify it's nickel-free, as not all manufacturers use the same alloy standards as we do at Grayling.

  • Surgical Stainless Steel is acceptable for most, but not everyone. It may contain low levels of nickel making it a potentially unsuitable option for individuals who are highly sensitive to nickel. Otherwise, this is a great, cost-effective option.

  • Sterling Silver is another option due to its natural hypoallergenic properties, but you will need to do your own research. Ensure you are buying high-quality silver, as many lower-quality or silver-plated items can still contain nickel.

AVOID:

  • Nickel, as we have already learned, is the most common cause of metal allergies, so you want to avoid any jewelry that contains it.

  • Lower-karat gold is often alloyed with metals such as nickel to increase hardness, but this can cause an allergic reaction if the nickel content is high enough. Be cautious when you spot anything under 14K (10K, for example, is quite prevalent online but is not the safest choice for sensitive skin).

  • Base metals such as copper can also cause allergic reactions, especially in individuals with sensitive skin; therefore, it is best to avoid them.

  • Plated items including jewelry carried at mega-retailers and chain stores won't last more that a few seasons, and some may even contain harmful metals such as cadmium and led. Best to steer clear!

Here’s a quick comparison of common metals and their suitability for individuals with sensitive ears who require hypoallergenic earrings:

Metal Hypo-Allergenic Level Pros Cons
F-136 Implant Grade Titanium 100%  Extremely hypoallergenic, biocompatible, lightweight, ideal for new piercings, and highly sensitive skin. It can be a higher price point than steel
Surgical Stainless Steel High Affordable and durable, smooth surface, easy to clean Can trigger reactions in people with severe nickel sensitivity
14K or Higher Solid Gold High Timeless look, available in many styles, generally safe Lower karats may contain nickel; product research is important
Sterling Silver High Beautiful finish, accessible price range Lower-quality products may contain nickel; product research is important
Lower Karat Gold (less than 14K) Low Harder than high-karat gold, affordable Alloy contents, such as nickel, can cause allergic reactions
Nickel None Strong, inexpensive, shiny when polished The #1 most common allergen! Causes dermatitis, rashes, blisters, and swelling
Brass None Attractive color, inexpensive, used in fast fashion jewelry, and many major brands  Contains copper and zinc, can be prone to tarnish and allergic reactions

When in doubt, opt for nickel-free/medical-grade materials. These indicators suggest that the jewelry is manufactured to meet higher standards of purity and quality. Implant-grade titanium, in particular, stands out for its perfect blend of strength, quality, safety, and value.

Implant/Medical Grade Titanium Earrings: Why They’re a Standout and a Favorite at Grayling

Here in the studio, we design exclusively from F-136 implant-grade or medical-grade titanium. This means our titanium meets stringent, science-based standards for biocompatibility, purity, and performance, as approved by ASTM (American Society for Testing and Materials). When shopping for earrings, read the entire product descriptions to ensure compliance with these standards and to ensure you are getting the best-quality product that will not cause allergic reactions.

Implant-grade titanium also carries advantages for daily wear. Let’s face it, taking your earrings out every night can get annoying. This is why we like this material for our Flat Back Earrings. Not only are they comfortable by design, but the titanium we use is designed to resist degradation, corrosion, and wear, even with long-term exposure to bodily fluids and tissues. The high-quality, smooth finish is easy to clean and less likely to harbor bacteria or cause microtrauma to tissues during healing, making it ideal for new piercings (Association of Professional Piercers, 2020).

It is important to note that not all titanium is created equal. Commercial-grade titanium can contain impurities or alloy blends that aren’t ideal for highly sensitive skin. This is why Grayling works exclusively with ASTM F-136 implant-grade titanium. It is specifically engineered for medical applications. This grade ensures our customers receive the highest level of quality, purity, and safety in their jewelry.

How to Read Product Pages Like a Pro

Now that you know what to look for when shopping for metals that are safe for your skin, how can you sift through the many companies offering hypoallergenic products, and how can you know who to trust?

To start, always read the full product page; don’t stop at the word “hypoallergenic” in the title. Be cautious of vague terms and postings that do not specify the exact metal content. To make your shopping process easier, here’s a quick hypoallergenic checklist you can keep handy in your search for jewelry:

  • Check the metal type. Look for specific names such as implant-grade titanium, platinum, surgical steel, or 14K-18K gold, not just the phrase “hypoallergenic earrings”.

  • Look for ASTM compliance terms like F136 or implant-grade titanium.

  • Avoid mystery plating. If you can’t tell what’s underneath the plating and the product description is unclear, skip it.

  • Research the brand, focusing on customer reviews, transparency, and certifications.

If you are unsure, please don’t hesitate to ask the manufacturer for more details. At Grayling, we aim to be entirely transparent about the composition of our products. Please feel free to request our ASTM-compliant mill certificates; we would be happy to provide them.

HYPOALLERGENIC EARRING FAQ’S

  1. What are hypoallergenic earrings? Put simply, they are pieces made from materials that are less likely to cause an allergic reaction. Metals such as titanium, surgical steel, platinum, and high-karat gold (14k or higher) are designed to minimize the risk of contact dermatitis and irritation commonly associated with nickel.

  2. Are titanium earrings hypoallergenic? Yes, implant-grade titanium is naturally non-reactive, hypoallergenic, biocompatible, and nickel-free, making it a safe option for individuals with nickel allergies or sensitive skin.

  3. Which gold is best for sensitive ears? For sensitive ears, the best gold options are 14K or higher, in either yellow or rose gold, because the higher the karat, the more pure gold there is, and pure gold is hypoallergenic. These higher karat weights offer a good balance of purity and durability.

  4. How can I prevent irritation from earrings? To prevent earring irritation, choose materials such as titanium, gold, or platinum. You will also want to ensure that you practice good hygiene and care. Keep your earrings clean. Wash your hands before handling your earrings, and give your ears a break - remove all your earrings and let those babies breathe now and then!

  5. Can hypoallergenic earrings still cause irritation? In sporadic cases, yes. Hypoallergenic means the metal is less likely to cause a reaction; however, everyone is different, and sensitivities vary. Sometimes these instances aren’t caused by the metal itself, but rather by trapped bacteria, leftover soap, or even friction. Be sure to visit our Cleaning & Care page for detailed instructions and expert tips.

  6. What’s the difference between hypoallergenic and nickel-free? Nickel-free means that no nickel is present in the metal. Hypoallergenic means that the item is designed to minimize allergic reactions, but it may still contain trace elements that can cause sensitivity in some individuals. Ideally, you want both. Titanium earrings are both nickel-free and hypoallergenic, which is why we consider them a fan favorite.

  7. Are titanium earrings suitable for new piercings? Yes, implant/medical-grade F-136 titanium is one of the safest and most popular materials for new and healing piercings. It’s lightweight, smooth, and non-reactive. These properties help minimize swelling and reduce the risk of infection during the healing process.
